Cord Blood Basics

Just trying to get some basic background and foundational information about cord blood, its collection and its uses? Saurabh Jain has provided a nice overview at The American Chronicle.

The piece, dated June 16, does not go into tremendous detail about every aspect of umbilical cord blood and its stem cells, but it is a handy primer to the matter.

Here's an excerpt from Jain's piece:

"Cord blood is the blood which is extracted from the umbilical cord and the placenta after a baby’s birth. It is rich in blood forming cells. These cells are called stem cells. Research has proved that stem cells can be used to effectively treat various diseases which were earlier regarded as difficult to cure."
