Advantages of using cord blood stem cells to fight disease...

With the hoopla over the Michael J. Fox ads, Rush Limbaugh's uncanny ability to simultaneously fit prescription drugs, cigars, viagra and his foot in his mouth simultaneously, and the rapidly approaching November elections, the topic of stem cell research is getting a great deal of additional attention these days.

I found this at the Cord Blood Registry Report. With all of the talk about these issues, it does make sense to define terms carefully. This post talks about the difference between embryonic stem cells and those culled from umbilical cord blood. It has an unabashedly pro-umbilical cord blood banking spin, but it is worth reading if you are still sorting things out with respect to the terminology used in the ongoing debate.

Give it a read. You can find it right here.

Michael J. Fox-directed diatribe does make one good point...

If you are in the mood to read some conservadribble, you might want to check out this post at "If You're Left You can't be Right," which is a reactionary supercon blog. The post on the recent Michael J. Fox and the political ads re: stem cell initiatives is standard bloviatory silliness from the school of half-thought.

However, it does make one good point. See, I can find something good in just about everything. It is right that umbilical cord blood and the stem cells therein have the potential to spur scientific advances without even raising the moral questions inherent in the embryonic stem cell debate.

"For non-adult stem cell research, a morally unquestionable alternative source exists: stem cells drawn from umbilical cord blood. Already a bank exists in Dubai collecting cord blood stem cells."

More on gold...

Gold. The very word "gold" conjures up images of wealth and value. That reputation is well-deserved. Throughout history, gold bullion has captured the attention of all people and has been an inarguable symbol of wealth. We no longer spend our gold coins with merchants, but gold bullion still has tremendous value. Gold is a stable investment, capable of weathering the storms of political and economic stability.

Many wise invesetors include gold in their investment portfolios and many more are beginning to understand its true value in these uncertain times. The Monex Deposit company, MDC, allows individuals to buy gold and other precious metals. They can be delivered immediately or held in safe storage at secure repositories. Monex companies have been a leader in gold investment for over three decades.

Taking Gold Seriously

You've undoubtedly seen many online gold investment opportunities. You may have been intrigued by the potential of gold trading, but put off by some of these offers due to concerns about the parties involved. BullionVault.com might change your thinking and compel you to investigate gold investment more seriously. That's because BullionVault.com takes gold seriously.

BullionVault is a means by which people can sell and purchase gold bullion from their computer. The gold itself is truly held in an assortment of vaults around the world. BullionVault.com gold is held in secure Brinks vaults making trading safe and secure. They offer daily account reconciliation and means by which to verify appropriate bullion ownership. They provide a live order board to facilitate easy trading.

Although the Cord Blood Banking Clearinghouse does not provide financial advice, does not advocate any particular investment strategy, and disclaims any liability related to actions taken on the part of its readers, it does appear as though BullionVault.com warrants the consideration and attention of potential investors. Gold investment, like all forms of investment, does carry risk, but global political instability, unpredictable economic circumstances and rising US trade deficits continue to position gold as a stellar investment opportunity. Those tracking the markets will know that gold has nearly doubled in value over the past five years. It's a sound potential investment for the right person using the right tools.

Interesting case re: 9/11 fund...

A widow of a victim of the Sept. 11 attacks sought compensation from the federal Victims Compensation Fund. She hired an attorney to represent her in the action, but the lawyer in question sought a startling $2 million dollars contingency fees for his effort. The attorney in question then filed for a judgment entitling him to the fee. The widow, not surprisingly, felt that the amount demanded was inappropriate considering the no-fault nature of the VCF. Simmons, Jannace & Stagg represented the widow as she fought the demand for $2 million. After demonstrating a lack of jurisdiction for the federal court, and stayed the judgment. This represents the first known federal court decision regarding attorney fee disputes and the 9/11 fund.
